Welcome to the New Year 2018 and the all-new Knox Family Histories (KFH) blog! The plan is to publish each month on genealogy-related topics. Several features have already been lined up, including:
To start off, however, here are a few words on professional genealogy and how KFH strive to be a bit different.
Family history research can be incredibly rewarding, promising a unique and personal story about the people who made you. At its best, it combines social history with individual stories of lives lived to create a truly distinctive account of the recent past. However, all that research can be time-consuming and confusing, especially for those new to the hobby. A common surname or a particularly elusive line can make proving links even more difficult. Whilst some enjoy the struggle, many find it off-putting and abandon their research early on.
Hiring a professional genealogist can be a great choice for those who can’t shake that curiosity but lack the time or expertise to do it themselves. Generally, there are two types of professionals – records agents and researchers. Records agents will visit archives and look up information for you from specific sources. They are useful mainly for more experienced amateurs whose research has progressed quite far and have a clear idea of what they want to know and where to find it. Researchers, on the other hand, will do the lot for you! Most genealogical researchers charge an hourly fee. They will take guidance from the client as to what they want to know, provide an estimate of cost and then carry on until the budget runs out, delivering a final report detailing their research.
This traditional method can work well but it also has some drawbacks. It can be difficult, for instance, for the client to pin down exactly what they want to know. Their interest may simply be in their general family history but such an open-ended brief can easily end up being very expensive or not uncovering the juiciest details in the time allotted.
Here at KFH, we wanted to offer something a bit different. Instead of hourly rates and open-ended projects, our packages have been specifically designed to offer fixed prices and clear outcomes. Each one gives a well-defined framework which can be tailored and tweaked to suit clients’ wishes and will be presented in an engaging and stylish finished product. From the broad outline of a Presentation Tree, to the focused Ancestor Profile and the very detailed Family History Book, there is something to suit every need and budget. Even more experienced researchers might benefit from the no-find, no-fee, Brick Wall Bulldozer to get past those tricky research blocks!
So, please, browse the website, have a look at all the packages on offer and let us do the hard work for you!
